E Ink's CEO steps down
"[Updated 9:55 a.m. and 1:35 p.m., see below] Russell Wilcox, until recently the president and CEO at Cambridge, MA-based display technology pioneer E Ink, has left the company, Xconomy has learned. In his 13 years with E Ink, Wilcox rose from the level of vice president of business development to the leadership helm, and engineered the sale of E Ink to Taiwan-based Prime View International (PVI) for $450 million last December. As of this morning, E Ink’s website still lists Wilcox as president. However, e-mails to Wilcox’s E Ink address elicit an auto-reply stating that “as of February 26, 2010, Mr. Wilcox is no longer with E Ink.” Wilcox’s LinkedIn profile states that his work at E Ink ended in February. [Update] E Ink spokesman Sri Peruvemba, reached by phone today, confirmed Wilcox’s departure. In reply to an e-mail inquiry, Wilcox told Xconomy this morning: “Yes I left E Ink at the end of last week after completing a transition and hand-off to PVI. It was the right moment to complete a super adventure for me, and E Ink will be in good hands under PVI CEO Scott Liu.”".

Freescale i.MX508 e-reader processor
"Freescale announced today a new processor called i.MX508 targeted for e-readers. The processor is based on an ARM A8 core and includes an E Ink controller. Freescale says that the chip is fast (800Mhz), efficient and cheap (less than $10 in large volumes). In fact they say that this chip can enable $150 e-readers. The new chip is faster than Freescale's previous e-reader chips (used in the Amazon Kindle and Sony's Readers, for example) which can result in faster page refresh and can enable new features. As the chip includes an E Ink controller, USB and NAND memory it can help reduce the price of the final product. Interestingly, the chip includes a special e-reader power mode, in which it can turn-off when users are reading a page to save power, and only operate at full-speed when users want to turn a page or perform an operation. The i.MX508 is expected to sample in 3Q 2010, and freescale (together with E Ink) are offering a dev-platform (called SABRE) which costs $1995 and is available now. "

The innovative eDGe e-reader, created by Entourage Systems, runs Google Android operating system. Spring Design's 'Alex' will also support Android apps. Yet any applications which require internet access will work only with Wi-Fi. The software will not work on the 64-bit version of Windows XP but does support Windows Vista and Windows 7. Recent announcements point to the use of Windows 7 in new color 'slate' e-readers such as Archos or HP. The Taiwanese company, MSI, has also created an e-reader/computer combo which runs Windows 7.

E-readers with operational systems, such as the leading Google Android, encourage openness. These innovative devices are 'cracked' to allow users to run Android apps as well as download music and access social networks. Yet Fortify Software, the application vulnerability specialist, has issued a warning to corporations about possible security issues with modified e-readers. When a devise is 'cracked' or repurposed in this manner, there isn't any way to check the security of the operating system 'cracks' or newly installed programs.

For usage outside the corporate world, however, e-readers have few drawbacks. E-reader companies are always trying to improve on features, performance, and design. E-readers have made a tremendous impact on the reading experience - what we read, where we read, and how we read books and newspapers. More and more people are choosing e-readers and their state-of-the art operating systems are helping to drive that demand."
